Is it illegal to own a Leopard Tortoise?

I am considering on getting a Leopard Tortoise... I do not know if it is illegal to get one, could someone please tell me? Also do you need a license I know for certain exotic pets you need a license to own one. OH! Is there anything else important I should know? Besides do my research? Things that are not often mentioned? what foods are good and bad for the tortoise?
