Where can i find the population of the gopher tortoise?
As far as I know, gopher tortoises are only native to the southeastern USA, primarily in south Georgia and northern Florida, but also as far west as Mississippi. Thery are fairly remarkable in that they are big-time burrowers and will dig several burrows of up to 48 feet long in their rather compact home range. Mature gopher tortoises are about a foot long and have very long front claws, and my experiences with them is that thery are very gentle (I lived in south Georgia for 9 years and would see them daily when I was running in the woods). Due to predators and habitat loss, they are listed as a threatened species. Best wishes, Z. G. Standing Bear at The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue in Divide, Colorado USA
