MY TORTOISE WILL ONLY EAT CLOTHES!?

My tortoise, (that I have had for more than 5 years now), Has been eating nothing but clothes in the past two days. I'm not sure exactly what kind of tortoise he is. I found him one day walking around in my front yard (las vegas, NV) Some desert tortoise. maybe. Anyways, I have been feeding him things like roses, broccoli, berries, lettuce, spinach, tomato skins, and sometimes, he'll eat bugs all by himself. only sometimes. So, I woke him up yesterday, and he didn't want to eat, and I thought that it was just one of those day for him. maybe he just wasn't hungry. But today, he's been awake since about 4:00 a.m, and He hasn't been eating some of his favorite foods. I tried everything that we had in the house, that he should eat, but the only thing he'll eat is clothing. He tore a piece off of a quilt, and he ate a pony-tail holder as if he was starving to death. I don't want to take him to the vet just yet because it's illegal for me to have him, and I'm not ready to let him go... Please give me some advice. He's never done this before.
